A long metal “anode rod” that attracts corrosive elements in the water. When the rod itself becomes so corroded that it can no longer do its job, the tank soon rusts out, leaks and needs replacement. However, if you replace your water heater anode rod before it fails, about every tow years, you can double the life of your water heater.
How to replace your Water Heater Anode Rod?/

Step1: Before you get started, close the shutoff valve, turn on the hot water at a faucet to relieve pressure, and turn off the electricity or gas to the heater. Open the drain valve near the bottom of the tank and drain out several gallons of water. Caution: The water is hot!

Step2: Drain some water from the tank to check for rust. It’s time for a new water heater if you see rusty flakes (not just orange water, which can come from corroded pipes or well water). If the water is clean, remove the rod to check its condition.

Step3: To loosen the rod, you’ll need an air compressor, a 1/2-in.-drive impact wrench and a 1-1/16-in. Even with a breaker bar, it can be nearly impossible to break the anode rod free.

Step4: Turn off the power or gas. Then close the cold-water valve at the top of the tank and drain off several gallons. Loosen the hex head with the impact wrench, but unscrew it the rest of the way by hand.
Hint:
The hex head may be under a plastic cap. Uncover it, then pull it up and out to check its condition. When the threads break free, stop turning and look for water around the hex head. If you see leakage, drain the tank further. If you don’t have enough overhead clearance to pull the rod out of the tank, bend it as you remove it.

Protect your Investment!

Maintain the service life of your water heater tank with our high quality and long lasting RV magnesium
anode rod
. Your heating tank comes with a rod installed. Replace the anode if you have that tank for
more than one year!

What is the threat for your Water Heater Tank?

A hot water heater tank is made from metal. Metal is gradually destroyed by the oxygen in the water.
This electro-chemical process is called oxidation. Plastic or enamel coating of the tank’s inside is no
effective protection
. No production process ensures crack-free coating.

In short, corrosion destroys the metal parts of your water heater tank until it fails and needs to be
renewed.

How does the Anode Rod efficiently protect?

Anode rods are made from less expensive metals with a high electro-chemical activity. They literally
sacrifice themselves by attracting the harmful corrosive action in the tank water, diverting from the
metal parts of your heater tank.

Magnesium vs. Aluminum/Zinc Anodes

Magnesium is superior to aluminium and zink. Zinc’s surface quickly oxidates and prevents an effective
functioning. Magnesium is electrochemically more active and attracts more harmful action. It is not
toxic
while aluminum can disturb a large number of biological processes in the human body.

How to extend the Anode Life

To extend the anode life, and as an effect, your water heater’s life,

– drain water from tank whenever your RV is not in use,
– avoid any extended time of non-use with water in tank,
– flush the tank on a regular basis,
– replace the anode rod every year or when 75% or more have worn

Avoid high expenses for the renewal of your water heater. Order now!

The Atwood water heater tank is aluminum and originally Atwood only installed a drain tap rather than an anode. As an industrial maintenance tech, Installing an anode would be a good measure to increase the life of the hot water heater tank.

Eleventree RV Magnesium Anode Rod extends the life of a water heater by attracting corrosive elements in the water, protecting the tank and elements from corrosion. This Anode Rod fits Atwood water heaters.

Safety warning:

To extend anode life, drain water from tank whenever RV is not being used.

Avoid any extended time of non-use with water in the tank.

Most water heater tanks are steel with a thin porcelain lining to protect the metal from corrosion. Since the lining eventually cracks, tanks have a second line of defense against rust, a long metal anode rod that attracts corrosive elements in the water. Water is naturally corrosive and becomes even more corrosive when it is heated. Protect your water heater from rust with the U.S. Solid Anode Rod, which is threaded to match all suburban model water heaters.
An anode rod also known in the industry as the “sacrificial lamb” is made of magnesium. Due to the position of magnesium to steel in the electromotive series of metals, the magnesium will corrode, producing an abundance of electrons which flow to the exposed steel surface and maintaining it in the electro-negative state. As current flow takes place, the anode rod reacts chemically to corrode at a rate faster than the steel inner tank. In less technical terms, the magnesium anode rod will corrode faster than the steel hot water tank. The anode rod corrodes faster than the steel in the tank, prolonging the life of your hot water heater.
